East Central’s one-act play SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT won top honors, a “starred” rating, at the Minnesota State High School League One-Act Play Festival on Friday, February 10th. The two-day event was held at the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.
Out of the 206 Class A one-act plays competing in the 2017 season, the top eight productions from across the state took the stage throughout the day. A panel of judges, after watching, listening, and then individually critiquing them, rated East Central’s production as a “starred” performance.
Judges rank the performances in five categories–physical characterizations, vocal characterizations, technical elements, educational value, and overall effectiveness of ensemble. In all five areas each of the three judges ranked SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT as “exemplary,” the highest rating possible. In their critiques the judges describing the production commented, “Wow!” “Bravo!” “Exceptional!” “Superb!” “Wonderful!” “Delightful!” “Inventive!” “Incredible!” “Amazing!” “Fabulous!” “Truly stunning scenic design!” “Fantastic costume design!” “Characters are perfect. What a lovely, enjoyable production. Fantastic job!” Judges stated that SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT “was easily the very best show of the day!”
SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT was adapted by East Central alumnus Aaron Jansen from the novel Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie. The play was directed by Kathleen Ebnet, assisted by Richard Ebnet and Aaron Jansen. In the play Wendy Darling lives in London with her parents and her two younger brothers, John and Michael. When Peter Pan appears in the middle of the night, looking for his shadow, the three Darling children are whisked away to Neverland, where pirates do battle with the lost boys. This version of the classic story remains true in spirit to the 1911 novel, Peter and Wendy, bringing to life the magic and melancholy of J. M. Barrie’s vision.
East Central was making its 10th MSHSL State One-Act Play Festival appearance and earned its sixth “starred” rating. Cast members were Molly Nygren, John Nygren, Anika Eaves, Belle Shervheim, Cece Shervheim, Abigail Holmes, Alex Finch, Aubrey Shervheim, Jamison Seibert, Mack Nelson, Kali Finch, Madison Nelson, Melody Kosbab, Emma Jansen, Cassidy Koland, and Ryan Feist. Technical crew members were Chance Dalbec and Nick Shaffer.
The cast and crew were presented a MSHSL State trophy and a Wells Fargo Spotlight on the Arts Award of Excellence for their “starred” performance.
